Methodists and Waldensians are Christians who belong to the family of protestant churches. Waldensians have been present in Italy since mediaeval times; repressed by the civil and religious authorities until the middle of the nineteenth century, only from then onwards were they able to express their faith throughout the whole of Italy. There are currently about 45.000 members of the Waldensian churches of Italy and America.

Co-operation between these two churches increased after the Second World War, culminating in the signing of a Covenant of Federation in 1975. Ecumenism, that is to say, working together with a view to a united witness, has always been a distinctive feature of the protestant world.
